Learn SAT vocabulary in context, not as a disconnected list

Definitions matter, but recognition alone is not enough. SAT vocabulary becomes useful when you can predict a word from context, distinguish a close alternative, and retrieve it after time has passed.

Predict before you reveal

Read the surrounding sentence first and predict the kind of meaning, tone, or relationship that belongs in the blank. Then compare the actual word to that prediction. This makes the definition answer a question rather than become an isolated fact.

Study contrasts and families

Link a word to a small, precise network: close synonyms, antonyms when useful, a root or affix with several defensible examples, and commonly confused neighbors. The goal is not to claim every similar-looking word is related; it is to make distinctions that help in a passage.

  1. Define the word in plain language.
  2. Write one contrast with a near neighbor.
  3. Notice a usable word-family or morphology connection.
  4. Choose the word for a new context after a delay.

Use spacing to protect memory

Bring words back after intervals, especially words you missed or confused. A correct answer after a hint is progress, but it is different evidence from an independent delayed retrieval.

Put the method into a study loop

Keep your own notes, targeted practice, review timing, and vocabulary retrieval together in a calm private workspace.
